Anthony’s Story — Why I Ran

“That finish line proved that no matter where you start, anything is possible.”

Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, Anthony Spaulding spent years caught in cycles of incarceration and loss. After his release from prison in 2022, A Safe Haven offered him shelter, meals, and mentors who believed in him when he had nothing left.

Through that support, Anthony rebuilt his life — earning his barber’s license, mentoring others, and finding purpose in giving back to the community that once helped him.

In 2025, he ran his first Bank of America Chicago Marathon with Team Run to End Homelessness as a symbol of resilience and renewal.

I was once a resident at A Safe Haven. Now I get to give back after they gave so much to me.

Why We Run

Every night, thousands of Chicagoans go without a safe place to sleep.
Every morning, our runners lace up to change that.

When you run with A Safe Haven Foundation, your determination mirrors the resilience of those rebuilding their lives.
Each mile funds housing, healing, and career pathways for people overcoming crisis.

76,375 Chicagoans experienced homelessness in 2022.
Your miles bring that number down — one stride at a time.
